Location: Old Cairo, Egypt About this Role and You: As a global organisation, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) operates in over 150 countries and territories, and honours and cares for the men and women of the Commonwealth forces who died in the First and Second World Wars, ensuring they will never be forgotten. Funded by six Member Governments, our work began with building, and now maintaining, cemeteries at 23,000 locations all over the world. Today, over a century after we first began, our work continues through our staff, supporters and volunteers who preserve our unique cultural, horticultural and architectural heritage and ensure that the stories of those who died are told. As the Head Gardener, you will play a crucial role in organising, planning, and overseeing the horticultural and caretaking work of the gardening staff. You will provide clear instructions to ensure day-to-day tasks are carried out efficiently and to a high standard. Additionally, you will be responsible for the management of subordinate team members, which includes performance reviews, routine disciplinary matters, and overall team morale. Supporting the Line Manager, you will help ensure that all Health & Safety policies and procedures are adhered to, promoting safe working practices at all times and setting an example of good workplace behaviour. Reporting and responding to workplace accidents or near misses will also be part of your responsibilities. A significant part of the role involves ensuring that all horticultural machinery, irrigation systems, equipment, and vehicles are kept in good running order by following maintenance schedules. You will also monitor and report structural defects, environmental changes, or instances of vandalism or degradation to the appropriate authorities and your supervisor. You will be able to demonstrate Substantial experience in team management or working in horticulture. Contract Type: 12 Months Fixed Term Contract
Hours: 42 hours per week excluding breaks. Spread over 6 days per week: Saturday to Thursday
The role may also include undertaking additional duties as assigned by or on behalf of Technical Hort Supervisor, requiring flexibility and a proactive approach to problem-solving.
