Our Mission and Values

Our Mission is to ensure those who died in service, or as a result of conflict, are commemorated so that they, and the human cost of war, are remembered forever.

Each of the 1.7 million war dead are commemorated at more than 23,000 of our iconic cemeteries and memorials around the world. More than 100 years after our formation, we care with the same passion and commitment, from our largest sites to our smallest. Even today, our expert teams are working to recover, identify and commemorate the casualties of the world wars.

Millions of people around the world visit our cemeteries, memorials, and visitor centres, browse our website, follow our socials and attend our talks, tours and events every year. Each of our visitors and supporters is important to us, allowing us to tell the stories of the world wars and keep the memories of our casualties alive.

Our organisation is entrusted with the responsibility and the great honour of caring for the graves, memorials, records, and stories of the fallen. We are an organisation of ABIDING CARE, which is shown each day, in all that we do, in who we are, and in how we work.

Our Values are built on this one vital word – CARE.

Commitment

We recognise that our work is extraordinary, and the pride we feel encourages us to go the extra mile each day to deliver our Mission.

Ambition

For ourselves, each other, and our organisation, to ensure that we hand our organisation to the generations to come, relevant, stronger, and fitter.

Respect

Respect and dignity are fundamental to everything that we do. We are a diverse, inclusive, global team. We act in trust and to build trust, with integrity, clarity, and honesty.

Excellence

We recognise that excellence is not a destination, rather it is a continuing dedication to high standards and improvement.

We care about you

  1. We CARE about your development

To help you achieve your full potential, we make considerable investment in training and development. We commit to providing both mandatory and technical training, together with a wide range of interesting and useful development opportunities throughout the year.

We have created our own Diploma for Horticulture Staff and for our Head Office employees we have plenty of opportunities to grow too!

We will reimburse the cost of professional subscriptions or memberships relevant to achieve your role. To help further develop the fulfilling of your aspirations we may provide study support and cover the costs of formal qualifications.

  2. We CARE about your wellbeing

We understand that for our employees to perform their best at work, they need to be happy and healthy. Across each of our global areas, we are committed to providing a safe work environment, with our dedicated team working hard to ensure that high levels of training are provided, alongside safe and reliable equipment and PPE wherever needed.

As well as offering Occupational Health and Travel Insurance, we have fully trained internal and external teams who help care for our employees’ physical and mental well-being. Ensuring that our team members continue to enjoy and value their work, we provide regular opportunities for feedback, including companywide surveys and smaller working groups that allow any questions or concerns to be heard.

Each of our new starters will be joining a team that cares about the work they do, at an organisation that cares about their success.

  3. We CARE for 138,000 acres

Our 800 horticulturists care for more than 100 varieties of plants and flowers at our sites across the globe, including caring for 80 different types of roses and maintaining more than 130,000 acres of lawn.

  4. We CARE about our craft

From our blacksmiths and stonemasons, carpenters and builders, our 160 craftspeople around the world combine the Commission’s 100+ years of experience with the latest tools and techniques to care for our global estate.

  5. We CARE about our conversation

Now more than ever, conservation and sustainability are at the heart of what we do as an organisation. As we continue to maintain our global commitment, we look to make the best choices for long-term sustainability and environmental positivity.
